Hotels, restaurants and cafés handle cash, cards and delivery-app payments every day, buy perishable stock, employ large teams and add service charges and government fees to bills. Hospitality accounting has to turn all of that into reliable daily figures, controlled costs and correct VAT.

SGA World provides accounting, audit, VAT and corporate tax for hotels, restaurants, cafés, cloud kitchens and catering businesses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with practical controls that stop revenue leaks and food cost creep.

Hospitality accounting in the UAE: hotel lobby with reception desk and lounge seating

Worked example

Example: A Restaurant Group With Three Outlets and Delivery Sales

A Dubai restaurant group runs three outlets and sells through two delivery apps.

  • Daily revenue audit: POS sales are matched to cash, card settlements and delivery app reports every morning; differences are investigated the same day.
  • Delivery apps: payouts are net of commissions, so sales and commissions are recorded separately, with VAT on both.
  • F&B cost: weekly stock counts show food cost rising from 28% to 33% at one outlet, traced to over-portioning.
  • VAT: the service charge and VAT are calculated correctly on every bill.
  • Leases: the three site leases are recorded under IFRS 16.

The group cut food cost and found AED 40,000 of unreconciled card settlements in the first quarter.

Talk to our team
01.Is VAT charged on restaurant service charges?

Service charges are generally part of the taxable consideration, so VAT at 5% applies to them.

02.How should delivery app sales be recorded?

Record the full sale and the app's commission separately, with VAT treated on each, rather than only the net payout.

03.What is a daily revenue audit?

A daily check that POS or PMS sales match cash, card settlements and app reports, with differences investigated.

04.What is a good food cost percentage?

It varies by concept, but many restaurants target roughly 25% to 35%. The key is tracking it weekly against your own target.

05.Do restaurant leases go on the balance sheet?

Usually yes, under IFRS 16, as a right-of-use asset and lease liability.

06.How are municipality and tourism fees treated for VAT?

Yes, a resident company with revenue up to AED 3 million can elect it, for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029.

08.Do hotels need an annual audit?

09.Can you work with our POS and PMS systems?
